Exclusive 2012 New Ninja 650R Revealed by Kawasaki

Suddenly it’s fall again, and time to start getting in as much riding as you can before the weather turns on us. It’s also time to see what the big OEMs have in store for the 2012 model year. Kawasaki gives us a surprise in these lean times with two new streetbikes as well as some significant upgrades to two other models.

Ninja 650R

Not quite all the way on the other side of the performance spectrum from the 14 is the Ninja 650R, a middleweight Twin known not just for being versatile, affordable and easy on new riders, but also fun for experienced riders to flog. The bike got a major revision in 2010, so the news of an all-new chassis and other big changes was a surprise. But there you have it—the 650R gets an all-new frame and swingarm and a host of other alterations.

The frame is the big news in 650 Ninja land. The old frame was a steel trellis design, and although we’ve never faulted the machine’s frame, it’s been replaced with a twin-pipe perimeter/backbone design that Kawasaki claims is more rigid, yet narrow-waisted enough to help shorter riders comfortably reach the ground. The bad news is weight—although the press release claims less weight from the new chassis, the overall claimed curb weight of the 650R has crept up 11 pounds, to a hefty 460.

Ninja 650R: New instruments include an “Eco” mode.

But there’s still plenty here to promise an improved 650R. Suspension settings are revised for more comfort, Dunlop’s excellent Roadsmart tires are standard fitment, the braking power is increased slightly, and there’s a new instrument panel with (mercifully) an analog tachometer as well as fuel consumption, range remaining and the “Eco” mode indicator that makes sense on a bike with the potential to return 50 mpg.

The motor has also been revised to deliver more of that noob-friendly midrange power, and styling has been updated to help the bike fit better with Kawasaki’s other sportbikes, with more aggressive looks. A new three-position adjustable windscreen gives the second-smallest Ninja some sport-touring chops.

We’re looking forward to a test ride.

Finally New 2012 Kawasaki Ninja Zx-14R Revealed

It’s gotta be ugly competing against the ZX™-14 year after year. When it arrived on the big-bore sportbike stage in 2006, the big Ninja® blew everyone’s minds – owners, journalists and competitors – with its incredible thrust, sport-tourer comfort, agile handling and aerodynamic full-coverage bodywork.

Continuous refinement has kept the 14 a step ahead of the competition, all while filling enthusiasts’ face shields with wild, ear-to-ear grins.

Fortunately for Kawasaki fans (and unfortunately for the competition), there’s no letting up for 2012. Not only is the newly R-designated Ninja ZX-14R massively more powerful, it’s also almost entirely new, with more of the character, design excellence, and finesse you’ve come to expect from Team Green™ – the company that’s been building legendary open-class motorcycles for more than 40 years.

New Kawasaki Ninja Zx-14R Features

  • Massively more powerful 1,441cc inline-four engine features a 4mm longer stroke, reworked cylinder head assembly, polished ports and lighter, stronger pistons for more power across the rev range.
  • KTRC traction-control system features three different modes for varying conditions and is controlled by a handy switch assembly on the left handlebar.
  • All-new slipper clutch assembly controls rear-wheel torque effects while braking and downshifting.
  • All-new exhaust system features tapered and reshaped head pipes and an all-new muffler assembly for low noise and emissions.
  • Redesigned aluminum monocoque frame is narrow, strong and rigid.
  • All-new swingarm assembly is longer and features strengthening gussets to cope with the engine’s newfound power.

2011 New Kawasaki Ninja Z1000 Overview

Development of the new Z1000 started with the specific goals of creating a distinctive visual impact and superior on-road performance. The end result is essentially a custom-made super streetfighter.

A unique blend of Japanese art and technology, the 2011 Z1000’s styling takes a dramatic leap forward with the distinct look of an apex predator. Hunched-down and ready to pounce, its visual impact is much stronger than that of a naked sportbike, or a derivative copy of some Euro trend.

2011 Standard Kawasaki Ninja Z1000 thrills before you even jump aboard, with some of motorcycling’s most rakishly stunning lines and body shapes. The aesthetic showcase begins with a low-mount front cowl that slopes back radically, highlighting the Z’s prow and, behind it, an adjustable instrument cluster featuring a multifunction LCD display covered by a trick-looking orange lens. The headlight represents Kawasaki’s first-ever use of a line-beam unit, the guts of which are integrated nicely into that angled cowl. Moving rearward, you come to a shapely fuel tank that’s flared on the sides to let you grab it with your knees and that’s trim at the back for a snug fit.

Building on the success of its Z1000 semi-naked sportster, and series of mid-size street-going Ninjas, Kawasaki has announced a 2011 big-bore amalgamation called the Ninja 1000.As the latest iteration of a bike first coined with this name in 1986, it will displace 45cc more than the fire-exhaling 998cc ZX-10R, albeit with 11.8:1 compression ratio, instead of 12.9:1. Its bore and stroke is 77.0mm X 56.0mm, compared to the supersport’s 76.0mm X 55.0mm.

The Z1000 clearly surpasses the dynamic performance of its predecessors, thanks to a new quick-revving 1,043cc inline-four cylinder engine, and an all-new quick-steering aluminium chassis connected to an all-new horizontal rear suspension design. Though it offers true sportbike handling; the Z1000’s comfortable, upright riding position mean it remains a practical transportation tool, even as the dramatic howl from its new cold-air intake raises hairs on the back of its rider’s neck.

The riding position is upright, with clip-on handlebars rising to meet the rider’s hands. The instrument cluster is based off the ZX-6R’s and looks intuitive with an analog tach and digital speedometer.

2011 Kawasaki ZX-10R Ninja

INTRODUCTION
They’ve been a staple of the sporting motorcycle world for decades: sportbikes that blend top-shelf engine and handling performance with a high degree of comfort, practicality and devastating good looks.

kawasaki ninja 1000cc

Kawasaki has built plenty over the years, from the original Ninja® 900R of the 1980s, to the ZX™-11 of the ’90s, and the ZZR®1200 of the ‘00s – standout performers that are also easy to live with, day in and day out.

KEY FEATURES
• 1,043cc inline-four with DFI® offers serious torque
• Lightweight aluminum frame is narrow and tuned to transmit optimal feedback to the rider
• Fully adjustable inverted front fork has settings designed for sporty performance and ride quality
• Placement of horizontal back-link rear suspension contributes to mass centralization
• Radial-mounted front brake calipers combine with the radial-pump front brake master cylinder to offer superb control and feel
• Sleek, supersport styling gives the Ninja® 1000 a distinctive look
• Relaxed, upright riding position contributes to all-day comfort
• Larger fuel capacity offers substantial range
• Windscreen is adjustable to three positions, allowing for optimum wind and weather protection

DOHC, 16-VALVE, 1.043cc Engine
• Liquid-cooled inline-four offers true open-class power from idle to redline, making it easy to harness for experts and novices alike
• Bore and stroke dimensions of 77.0 x 56.0mm offer an ideal balance of peak power and low
• and mid-range flexibility
• 38mm Keihin throttle bodies cram the air/fuel mixture directly into combustion chambers via downdraft intakes for maximum power
• Oval sub-throttles help keep the engine slim, and a slim midsection allows an ideal bike/rider interface for maximum comfort and control
• Engine’s rev limiter comes into play “softly,” providing usable overrev character since power doesn’t drop off suddenly at high rpm
• The engine’s relatively low crankshaft position allows a moderately long stroke without adding engine height
• A secondary engine balancer, driven off a gear on the sixth web of the crankshaft, eliminates excess vibration and contributes to rider comfort

EXHAUST SYSTEM
• The exhaust system features a 4-into-2-pre-chamber-into-2 layout. Silencer end-caps maintain the quad-style image
• Main and pre-catalyzers ensure cleaner emissions
• Thanks to the under-engine pre-chamber, silencer volume is reduced, and silencer weight is low. Exhaust system offers excellent mass centralization and contributes to a low center of gravity

ALUMINUM BACKBONE FRAME
• Aluminum backbone frame is similar in concept to the Ninja ZX-10R’s, and helps make the bike narrow and easy to grip with the knees for maximum rider comfort and feedback
• The frame is lightweight and highly rigid, and uses the engine as a stressed member for solid handling and optimum stability
• Frame elements are tuned to transmit optimal engine feedback to the rider
• The frame’s five-piece construction consists of steering stem, left and right main frames, and two cross pieces. The two main frame components have open C-shaped cross sections
• Welds were eliminated wherever possible for simplicity and appearance; the frame beams and swingarm brackets are single die-cast pieces
• The new frame uses four engine mounts, three of which are rigid, one of which (the upper rear crankcase mount) is rubber
• Rear subframe is a three-piece aluminum die-casting assembly that’s light, strong and optimizes mass centralization
• The sub-frame is an example of form and function combined, negating the need for side covers and allowing underseat narrowness for a shorter reach to the ground.

FULLY ADJUSTABLE 41MM FORK
• The Ninja 1000’s inverted fork is adjustable for compression damping, rebound damping and spring preload – and is protected from harm by a cool-looking shroud
• Settings are designed for both sporty performance and ride quality
• Separate, raised handlebars contribute to the sporty, comfortable riding position; bar stays are mounted to the fork tube tops, which extend above the top clamp
• A thick urethane seat provides a high level of rider and passenger comfort
• Tapered-type grips, like those used on supersport models, offer a more direct feel
• Ninja ZX-10R-style footpegs with knurled surfaces offer good grip, direct feel and control, and no-nonsense looks
• The passenger footpeg brackets incorporate convenient luggage hooks

LARGE VOLUME FUEL TANK
• Five-gallon (19L) fuel tank offers substantial range
• Steel construction facilitates use of magnetic tank bag
• Tank shape (flared edges and a trim shape at the back) allows riders to easily grip tank with their knees
