Exclusive 2012 New Ninja 650R Revealed by Kawasaki

Suddenly it’s fall again, and time to start getting in as much riding as you can before the weather turns on us. It’s also time to see what the big OEMs have in store for the 2012 model year. Kawasaki gives us a surprise in these lean times with two new streetbikes as well as some significant upgrades to two other models.

Ninja 650R

Not quite all the way on the other side of the performance spectrum from the 14 is the Ninja 650R, a middleweight Twin known not just for being versatile, affordable and easy on new riders, but also fun for experienced riders to flog. The bike got a major revision in 2010, so the news of an all-new chassis and other big changes was a surprise. But there you have it—the 650R gets an all-new frame and swingarm and a host of other alterations.

The frame is the big news in 650 Ninja land. The old frame was a steel trellis design, and although we’ve never faulted the machine’s frame, it’s been replaced with a twin-pipe perimeter/backbone design that Kawasaki claims is more rigid, yet narrow-waisted enough to help shorter riders comfortably reach the ground. The bad news is weight—although the press release claims less weight from the new chassis, the overall claimed curb weight of the 650R has crept up 11 pounds, to a hefty 460.

Ninja 650R: New instruments include an “Eco” mode.

But there’s still plenty here to promise an improved 650R. Suspension settings are revised for more comfort, Dunlop’s excellent Roadsmart tires are standard fitment, the braking power is increased slightly, and there’s a new instrument panel with (mercifully) an analog tachometer as well as fuel consumption, range remaining and the “Eco” mode indicator that makes sense on a bike with the potential to return 50 mpg.

The motor has also been revised to deliver more of that noob-friendly midrange power, and styling has been updated to help the bike fit better with Kawasaki’s other sportbikes, with more aggressive looks. A new three-position adjustable windscreen gives the second-smallest Ninja some sport-touring chops.

We’re looking forward to a test ride.

The Ninja 650 sold in India will produce peak power of 71bhp at a rather relaxed 8500 rpm, making it a great choice for avid tourers. Peak torque is rated at 66Nm, and comes at 7000rpm. The engine, mated with a six-speed transmission would work best with 91 Octane fuel. At 178kg, the Ninja 650 may be slightly heavy, but that power rating is enough to negate any effect of that weight on its acceleration and top speed.

Now Bajaj Auto has updated their website with a countdown timer by which its clear that the rumors of the 8th June launch were true. 15 days from now!

One of the most successful sports bike producers in the world, Kawasaki Head has given a hine in his interview in april about  the Launch of Bigger Ninja  and now it officially announced . The company is going to surprise its customers once again by Kawasaki Ninja 650R after being successful with Kawasaki Ninja 250R in India.

The guess price of this bike will be Rs.5,50,000 to Rs.6,50,000. Fingers crossed on the pricing!

The Kawasaki Ninja 650R has aggressive edgy designing when it comes to the fairing however the tank and the rest of the body is more curvy. The bike has comfortable seat, a fine handlebar and lower foot pegs that produce natural and comfortable riding. The low seat and the shape of the bike make the bike easy to control when it is on standby mode on the road. A wide windshield is produced to protect the driver from winds.

Apart from the Hyosung GTX650R, the Kawasaki Ninja 650R will be the only other 650cc sports bike in India. The GTX650R as well as the Ninja 650R looks impressive on paper however the cost at which they are launched in India will play a major role which one sells more.

Kawasaki Ninja 650R (ER-6F) Launching Soon In India

According to our sources, India Kawasaki would get the bigger, meaner, Kawasaki Ninja 650R into India in mid 2011. The earlier the better, we say!

We reported earlier that Kawasaki has set up India Kawasaki Motors subsidiary for big motorcycles (250cc+) and now we got some more news on that front. Kawasaki Ninja 650R (ER-6F) is entering India as a Completely Knocked-Down (CKD) unit and will be entirely assembled in Bajaj’s Chakan plant where the baby Ninja is also assembled.

We expect the price of the Kawasaki Ninja 650R to be in the range of Rs 5-6 lakhs. Worst case, the price might go up to Rs 6.5 lakhs. The Ninja 650R is priced at US$ 7100 in the US – that would be just Rs 3.14 lakhs in India! The rest of the price is due to excise duties, which are even higher at 110 per cent for CBU vehicles.

Other motorcycle manufacturers get their superbikes into India through the CBU route, attracting much higher import duties resulting in very high prices and making these bikes not affordable to many. But now with Kawasaki deciding to import the bikes as CKDs and then assemble them here, this should be a very big news to bike enthusiasts.

The Kawasaki Ninja 650R is an awesome motorcycle which has more than enough power needed on the Indian roads. At 650 cc, this is really not a superbike but a streetbike – not that it matters in India where chances of coming across another 650 cc bike are extremely rare!

If you compare the Kawasaki Ninja 650R to the other superbikes that are sold in India, the 650R would sound like great value for money.
